Can you get weight loss injections on the NHS?
Yes, but most people can't, and waiting lists are long.
Wegovy is only available through an NHS specialist weight management service, with a GP referral. You'll usually need a BMI of 35 or more along with weight-related health problems like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, or sleep apnoea. Lower thresholds apply for some ethnic backgrounds, and rules differ depending on where you live.
Mounjaro is available through specialist weight management services. Your GP can also prescribe it, but only if you have a BMI of 40 or more and at least four weight-related health problems. Lower BMI thresholds apply for some ethnic backgrounds.
Even if you qualify, NHS waiting times can run from months to years depending on your area, and NHS care includes a behavioural support programme alongside your medication.
