Yes. The Wegovy pill is now approved by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), so you can switch from Wegovy injections to the tablet.

Both the injection and the pill contain semaglutide, so moving between them is a change in how the medication is delivered rather than a change in treatment. Your prescriber will review your treatment and guide the switch.

The only other semaglutide tablet available in the UK is Rybelsus, which is licensed for type 2 diabetes rather than weight loss. It uses much lower doses than the Wegovy pill and produces less weight loss in trials, so it isn't a direct swap for the Wegovy pill.

How to switch from Wegovy injections to the pill

To switch from Wegovy injections to the pill, you take your final dose of the injection, wait one week, then start the Wegovy pill at a dose your clinician recommends. Here's each step:

1. Speak to your clinical team. They'll check switching is suitable for you based on your health history, your current Wegovy injection dose and how your treatment is going.
2. Take your final injection dose. There's no need to taper down or reduce your dose before switching.
3. Wait one week. Semaglutide stays active in your body for around a week after a dose, so your first tablet is due on the day you'd normally inject. You simply take a tablet instead of injecting that day.
4. Start your daily routine. From then on, you'll take the Wegovy pill every morning on an empty stomach.

You should never use Wegovy injections and Wegovy tablets at the same time, and you should not combine the pill with any other GLP-1 medication, such as Mounjaro, Ozempic or Rybelsus.

What dose of the Wegovy pill will you start on?

The pill and the injection don't have matching strengths. With the injection, the semaglutide enters your bloodstream directly. The tablet is swallowed instead, and only a small amount of the semaglutide makes it through your stomach into your blood. That's why the tablet doses look much higher on paper: a 25mg tablet isn't more medication than a 2.4mg injection, it's dosed that way to allow for the difference in absorption.

The Wegovy pill comes in four strengths: 1.5mg, 4mg, 9mg and 25mg.

If you started below the maximum recommended starting dose, you may also feel hungrier than usual while you titrate up.

Side effects on the tablet are mostly similar to the injections, mainly mild digestive symptoms that settle as your body adjusts. How noticeable they are depends partly on the dose you start on: a lower starting dose tends to mean fewer side effects, and they can briefly return when you move up a dose. If your goal is to keep losing weight, you can continue making progress on the tablet. In the OASIS 4 trial, people taking the Wegovy pill 25mg lost an average of 16.6% of their starting weight over 64 weeks when taken as prescribed. That's similar to the standard 2.4mg injection dose (17.5% over 72 weeks). The highest-dose Wegovy 7.2mg injection produced around 20.7% over 72 weeks, so if you're switching from a high injection dose, your rate of weight loss may slow down.
