How Effective Is Wegovy Pill?

Wegovy pill has proven effective in clinical trials, helping people achieve significant weight loss. Like the injection, it works on GLP-1 receptors, mimicking the body's natural hunger hormones to:

  • Suppress appetite and reduce food intake.
  • Slow down the stomach emptying - helping you feel fuller for longer.
  • Increase satiety - helping you control portion size and overall calorie intake.

Clinical trials have demonstrated that at the dose of 25 mg once daily, patients lost up to an average of 16.6% of their starting body weight over 64 weeks, with over 46% losing 15% or more.

How To Take Wegovy Tablets

Wegovy is a once-daily oral tablet.

  • Take one tablet every morning on an empty stomach after a recommended fasting period of at least 8 hours.
  • Swallow the tablet whole with 120 ml of water only - do not split, crush, chew, or dissolve it. Do not take it with juice, coffee, tea, or any other liquid.
  • Wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking or taking other oral medications.
  • If you miss a dose, skip it and take your next tablet the following morning as usual. Do not take a double dose to compensate for a missed dose.

Your Dosing Schedule

Days
Daily Tablet Dose
Days 1–30
1.5 mg once daily
Days 31–60
4 mg once daily
Days 61–90
9 mg once daily
Day 91 onwards
25 mg once daily

The dose is increased gradually to allow your body to adjust to the medication and minimise side effects, starting with 1.5 mg tablet once daily, which is increased gradually every 30 days, up to a maximum of 25 mg daily.

If you find a dose is working well for you, it's fine to remain on this dose without increasing. If you're struggling with side effects at any stage, reach out and we can discuss slowing the escalation or adjusting your plan.

We strongly recommend reading the patient information leaflet included in your medication box. It contains vital information on how to use Wegovy tablets, potential side effects, and important safety information.

How to switch from Wegovy injection to Wegovy pill

If you have previously been on Wegovy injections, you take your final dose of the injection, wait one week, then start the Wegovy pill at a dose your clinician has recommended. Here's each step:

  1. Take your final injection dose. There's no need to taper down or reduce your dose before switching.
  2. Wait one week. Semaglutide stays active in your body after a dose, so your first tablet is due on the day you'd normally inject. You simply take a tablet instead of injecting that day.
  3. Start your daily routine. From then on, you'll take the Wegovy pill every morning on an empty stomach.

Do not take your pill sooner than advised, there should be no overlap between your injection and pill doses. You should never use Wegovy injections and Wegovy tablets at the same time, and you should not combine the pill with any other GLP-1 medication, such as Mounjaro, Ozempic or Rybelsus.

It's common to experience some side effects as you're starting out on treatment. These are usually mild and temporary as your body gets used to the medication. Common side effects include:

  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea or constipation
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Abdominal pain
    • Wegovy may increase the risk of gallbladder problems and pancreatitis, particularly in people who experience rapid or significant weight loss. Symptoms can include severe upper stomach pain that may radiate to the back, nausea, vomiting, or fever. In rare cases, these conditions can be serious or fatal. Stop treatment immediately and seek urgent medical attention at the first sign of symptoms.
  • Acid reflux / heartburn
  • Burping and flatulence
  • Changes in skin sensation (e.g. tingling, burning, or sensitive skin)
  • Hair loss

Vomiting — While vomiting can be a side effect of treatment, ongoing vomiting shouldn't be seen as normal and needs to be reviewed. If you're having side effects that are severe, not improving, or disrupting daily life, please contact the clinical team for support. A small tweak, like a dose adjustment, can often make a significant difference.

Constipation — If you experience severe or ongoing constipation while on treatment, please reach out to our clinical team. If you notice any concerning changes, such as strong abdominal pain, swelling, vomiting, blood in your stool, or if you are unable to pass gas or stool for several days, seek support straight away.

Be aware of any sudden changes in your vision, as this may be a rare but serious side effect of Wegovy. If this occurs, seek urgent medical attention promptly. See: GLP-1s and vision for more information.

If you're using your side effect care package to help manage symptoms, remember to wait at least 30 minutes after taking your Wegovy tablet before taking any other medications.

You can also report side effects through the government's Yellow Card Scheme at https://yellowcard.mhra.gov.uk/. Your feedback helps to improve medication safety for everyone.

Cautions and Safety Information

Here's some important safety information about your medication.

Cautions and Safety InformationHere's some important safety information about your medication.

Wegovy Pills and Other Medications

Because Wegovy tablets slow stomach emptying, they have the potential to affect how other oral medications are absorbed by your body. This means some medicines may be absorbed more slowly, or in different amounts, than usual. You must wait at least 30 minutes after taking your Wegovy tablet before taking any other medications.

Make sure you have disclosed all your current medications to our clinical team so we can make sure treatment is safe, and update us if you start any new medications during treatment.

A few things to be aware of:

  • Levothyroxine - If you take levothyroxine, a few simple steps will help make sure both medications work as they should.
    • Timing matters. Take your Wegovy tablet first thing in the morning as usual, then wait at least 30 minutes before taking levothyroxine or any other medication. Alternatively, your GP may suggest moving your levothyroxine to bedtime.
    • You'll need a blood test. Wegovy can affect how much levothyroxine your body absorbs, so we recommend getting your thyroid levels checked 8 weeks after starting Wegovy, and 8 weeks after each dose increase. Make sure your GP knows you are taking Wegovy so they have the full picture when reviewing your results and adjusting your levothyroxine dose if needed.
    • As you lose weight, your body may need slightly less levothyroxine over time, so keeping up with regular checks throughout treatment is important.
  • Medications that require close monitoring - if you take any medicines where the dose needs to be very precise, increased monitoring may be recommended when starting or changing your Wegovy dose.
  • Methotrexate (for non-cancer indications such as rheumatoid arthritis/skin conditions) - Regular blood monitoring is essential at least once a month until you are stable on your treatment. Speak with your GP or specialist for advice.
  • Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) - If you take oral HRT, it's important to let your GP or HRT provider know if you're using Wegovy, as these can reduce how well oral medicines are absorbed. Always report any unexpected bleeding so your treatment can stay safe and effective.
  • Oral contraceptives - Studies indicate there is no significant interaction between Wegovy and oral contraceptives. However, as nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea are common side effects of Wegovy, particularly in the early weeks and around dose increases, there is a practical risk that these could reduce how reliably your contraceptive pill is absorbed. Combined with the importance of avoiding pregnancy while taking Wegovy, we recommend using an additional barrier method of contraception for at least 4 weeks after starting Wegovy and for 4 weeks after each dose increase. If you experience vomiting within a few hours of taking your pill, follow the missed pill guidance in your contraceptive leaflet.

If you're unsure whether any of your current medications could be affected, please reach out to our clinical team or speak to your pharmacist.

What's Voy's Approach to Maintenance?

We've designed a flexible treatment pathway to help you maintain your weight with confidence. We know that maintaining your weight can feel daunting, but you're not alone. Everyone's maintenance journey is unique, and we're here to support yours as you navigate this new stage in your treatment. While it's completely safe to stop medication, some people prefer to ease off gradually.

Our approach is all about finding what works best for you, whether that's continuing on a lower dose, tapering slowly, or stopping altogether. You can manage your dose directly in the app.

You're welcome to stay on treatment for as long as it supports you, or take a break and return later if needed, provided your weight remains within our reactivation guidelines. Whatever your path, we're here to help you feel confident every step of the way.

Goal weight varies depending on your individual health, medical history, and any existing conditions. It's important not to lose too much weight, as a low BMI can lead to health risks such as:

  • Nutritional deficiencies
  • Loss of muscle mass and strength
  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Reduced bone density (fracture risk)
  • Weakened immune system

For safety reasons, treatment would need to be discontinued if your BMI falls below 19.

Off-Label Prescribing

In the UK, medicines are regulated by the MHRA, which grants licences based on clinical trial evidence of a medicine's safety and effectiveness for specific conditions and patient groups.

Sometimes, additional evidence and clinical experience show that a medicine can also be effective outside of its licensed use. When a medicine is prescribed in this way, whether for a different condition, dosage, or patient group, it is called off-label prescribing.

This is a recognised and appropriate practice when supported by strong evidence, national guidance, and clinical judgment. For example, some treatments may be offered at a lower BMI for people from certain ethnic backgrounds who are at higher risk of obesity-related health problems.

Our clinical team carefully considers the available data to ensure that any off-label treatment is safe, effective, and in the best interest of the patient.

Money Back Guarantee
