Menopause

Vagifem

Vagifem is a low-dose vaginal oestrogen tablet used to relieve the genitourinary symptoms of menopause, including vaginal dryness, discomfort, and urinary symptoms. It is inserted directly into the vagina using a disposable applicator, delivering estradiol locally to the vaginal tissue. Vagifem is suitable for postmenopausal women experiencing genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM), whether or not they are using systemic HRT.

What is Vagifem?

Vagifem contains estradiol 10 micrograms, which is the lowest available dose of topical vaginal oestrogen. It is delivered in a small dissolvable tablet inserted into the vagina. It works by replenishing oestrogen directly in the vaginal and urethral tissues, which become thinner, drier, and more sensitive as oestrogen levels fall after menopause. Unlike systemic HRT, Vagifem acts locally with minimal absorption into the bloodstream, making it appropriate for women who want targeted relief without affecting oestrogen levels throughout the body. It is used daily for the first two weeks, then twice weekly on an ongoing basis.

Benefits of Vagifem

Vagifem provides direct, targeted relief for the genitourinary symptoms of menopause, which affect a significant number of women yet are often undertreated. Unlike systemic HRT, the benefits here are focused precisely where they are needed, in the vaginal and urethral tissues. Many women begin to notice an improvement in comfort within the first few weeks of use, with more significant changes in tissue health building over the following months. Clinical trial data shows meaningful improvements in vaginal symptoms after 12 weeks of consistent use.

Symptoms this treatment addresses:

  • Vaginal dryness
  • Vaginal soreness or irritation
  • Pain or discomfort during sex (dyspareunia)
  • Vaginal itching
  • Urinary urgency or frequency
  • Recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs)
  • Discomfort when urinating
  • Mild pelvic organ prolapse symptoms

Other benefits include:

1 Safe for long-term use
2 Supports bladder health
3 May help with mild prolapse symptoms
4 Acts directly on vaginal and urethral tissues, low absorption into bloodstream
5 Cardiovascular considerations

Potential side effects of Vagifem

Some women experience some adjustment symptoms during their first few weeks on Vagifem. This is your body adapting to having different hormone levels in the vaginal tissue than it has recently been accustomed to. These effects typically diminish noticeably within the first month and should largely resolve by your three-month review.
