Utrogestan

Utrogestan is a body-identical, oral micronised progesterone used as the progestogen component of combined HRT for women who have a uterus. Taken alongside oestrogen, it protects the womb lining from thickening, a necessary safeguard when using oestrogen as part of HRT. It is derived from plant sources and is chemically identical to the progesterone your body naturally produces.

What is Utrogestan?

Utrogestan contains micronised progesterone. This is progesterone that has been broken down into ultra-fine particles and suspended in oil to improve absorption when taken as a capsule. It is prescribed alongside oestrogen for women who still have a uterus, as oestrogen alone can cause the womb lining to thicken over time, increasing the risk of endometrial hyperplasia and endometrial cancer. Utrogestan counteracts this effect, keeping the womb lining thin and healthy. It is usually taken at bedtime, as progesterone has a natural sedative quality that can support sleep. Women who have had a hysterectomy do not need to take a progestogen.

Benefits of Utrogestan

Utrogestan does not directly relieve menopause symptoms, that is the role of oestrogen. Its primary purpose is to protect the womb lining and make combined HRT safe for women who have a uterus. When used as part of a balanced HRT plan, it plays an essential supporting role and offers several additional advantages over synthetic progestogens. Evidence suggests that micronised progesterone has a more favourable profile than synthetic alternatives on both breast tissue and cardiovascular health
