What is Slynd?

Slynd is a progestogen-only pill containing 4mg drospirenone, a synthetic progestogen. It is licensed in the UK as a contraceptive, but some clinicians may prescribe it off-licence as part of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for individuals who still have a womb.

When you take oestrogen as part of HRT, it can cause the lining of the womb (endometrium) to thicken. Slynd balances this effect, helping to keep the lining healthy and reducing the risk of endometrial cancer.

Slynd is taken daily and continuously when used for HRT. The standard contraceptive pack includes 4 inactive (placebo) pills, but when used for HRT, these are typically omitted, and active pills are taken every day without a break.

Benefits of Slynd

Slynd does not relieve menopause symptoms directly, that is the role of oestrogen. Its job is to protect your womb lining, making combined HRT safe for women who still have their uterus. It is prescribed off-licence as part of HRT, typically for women who have not tolerated other progestogens well. Slynd contains drospirenone, a synthetic progestogen with a unique property: it actively counteracts fluid retention, which means it may reduce the bloating and water retention that some women experience with other progestogen options.

1 Protects the womb lining
2 Reduces bloating and water retention
3 Alternative for women sensitive to other progestogens
4 Continuous dosing with no monthly bleed
5 Better tolerated for mood by some women
6 Available without body-identical hormones
