Thinking about switching from Mounjaro to Wegovy or the other way around? Whether it’s due to cost, side effects, or slower progress than hoped, many people consider changing medications during their weight loss journey. You might have heard about Wegovy’s upcoming 7.2mg dose, which narrows the gap in effectiveness with Mounjaro, or seen headlines about its heart health benefits.

Whatever the reason, here’s what to know about switching safely, what to expect, and why more people are now leaning toward Wegovy.

Why consider switching?

There are a few reasons someone might want to switch between GLP-1 medications like Mounjaro and Wegovy:

  • Progress and effectiveness – If your weight loss has slowed, plateaued, or isn't meeting your expectations, it might be time to explore alternatives. Wegovy’s new 7.2mg dose is expected later this year and has shown average weight loss of 20.7% in trials (STEP-UP) with one in three participants losing 25% or more of their body weight. These results significantly narrow the gap in effectiveness between Wegovy and higher-dose Mounjaro.
  • Side effects and tolerability – Some people may tolerate one medication better than the other. Both Wegovy and Mounjaro commonly cause gastrointestinal symptoms like nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, and abdominal discomfort, especially during the first few weeks. However, individual responses can vary. For example, some users report milder symptoms with Wegovy, while others find Mounjaro easier to tolerate. If side effects have been difficult to manage or are disrupting daily life, switching may help you continue your weight loss journey more comfortably.
  • Cardiovascular benefits – Wegovy is currently the only GLP-1 approved to reduce major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) in people with obesity or overweight and established heart disease. In the SELECT trial, semaglutide 2.4mg reduced the risk of cardiovascular death, heart attack, or stroke by 20%.

Step by step: How to switch between Mounjaro and Wegovy

Step 1 – Share your updated medical details

We’ll check for any changes since you started treatment, including your medical history, any side effects, the strength of your last Mounjaro dose, and when you last took it. This helps us ensure switching is safe and appropriate for you.

Step 2 – Clinician review and approval

A Voy clinician will review your answers, progress, and treatment history to confirm the switch is suitable. If everything looks good, we’ll approve your Wegovy prescription.

Step 3 – Receive your medication

Once approved, your Wegovy pen will be delivered straight to your door in secure, discreet packaging.

Remember: Keep your Wegovy pen in the fridge (2–8°C) until you're ready to use it. After your first injection, it can be stored in the fridge or at room temperature (below 30°C), but must be used within 6 weeks. View our full Wegovy storage guide.

Step 4 – Wait one week between medications

Allow at least 7 days between your final Mounjaro dose and your first Wegovy injection. Ideally, begin on your usual injection day to keep your routine consistent.

Step 5 – Start your new medication

Remember, Wegovy only needs to be primed before the first use, unlike Mounjaro, there’s no need to check the flow before each injection.

Step 6 – Check in with us

We’ll follow up after your first injection to see how you’re feeling and make sure everything is going smoothly. You’re also welcome to reach out any time. You can speak to one of our clinicians within minutes via live chat or the hotline if you have any questions or concerns.

How to switch from Wegovy to Mounjaro

The steps are very similar to switching in the other direction. You’ll still need to wait at least 7 days between your final Wegovy injection and your first dose of Mounjaro.

Most people will start Mounjaro at the lowest dose (2.5mg).

A few key differences to keep in mind:

  • Priming: Unlike Wegovy, Mounjaro requires a flow check (priming) before every dose — not just the first.
  • Storage: Mounjaro should be stored in the fridge (2–8°C) before first use. After the first injection, it can be kept at room temperature ( up to 30°C) or in the fridge but must be used within 30 days.

Is it safe to switch between Mounjaro and Wegovy?

Yes, switching between GLP-1 medications is safe when done with clinical guidance. Most people do well with the transition, but it’s normal to experience:

  • Mild side effects like nausea or digestive discomfort, especially in the first few weeks as your body gets used to the new medication. Mounjaro side effects are similar to Wegovy side effects.
  • A short adjustment period while your system adapts

At Voy, we carefully review your full treatment history, including your dose, progress so far, side effects, and your personal goals. This allows us to recommend a safe switch and the most appropriate starting dose for you.

How long should I wait between my last and first dose?

A one-week gap is usually enough. You can start Wegovy (or Mounjaro) the week after your last injection, just make sure at least 7 full days have passed since your previous dose. Ideally, stick to your regular injection day to maintain your routine.

Can you switch without losing progress?

Yes. While some people notice a brief pause in weight loss after switching, this is usually temporary. In fact, switching can sometimes help you move forward, especially if you’ve plateaued, struggled with side effects, or couldn’t progress to a higher dose due to cost.

If your new medication is better tolerated or more affordable, it may allow you to increase your dose more smoothly and stay consistent, both of which can support better results over time.

Consistency with your habits and patience with your body goes a long way. Everyone’s journey is different, but with the right support, switching doesn’t have to mean starting over. Our team is here to guide you every step of the way.
